Wegovy meal plan: what to eat on semaglutide

Updated October 2026 · Based on FDA prescribing information and the 2025 joint nutrition advisory

Wegovy (semaglutide) is made by Novo Nordisk and now comes as a weekly injection and as a daily tablet, both covered by one FDA label. On either form, appetite drops and stomach side effects are common at first. Here is what the label says, and the food priorities experts recommend.

Short answer The Wegovy label (revised 05/2026) says to use it with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity and to drink fluids to lower the chance of dehydration. It gives no menu. The 2025 joint advisory recommends a protein source at each meal, regular, small meals, adequate fluids, fiber from foods added gradually, and minimal alcohol. Tablet users follow the label's instructions on taking it before eating.

What the Wegovy label says

Side effect rates in the label

Wegovy label, Table 3: adults, 2.4 mg injection versus placebo, percentage of patients. The dose identifies the trial group only; your prescriber decides your dose.

Nausea16 / 44
Diarrhea16 / 30
Vomiting6 / 24
Constipation11 / 24
Abdominal pain10 / 20

For the newer 7.2 mg dose (Table 4), nausea was reported in 39% of patients, versus 35% at 2.4 mg and 13% on placebo. Severe stomach reactions occurred in 4.1% of patients on the injection versus 0.9% on placebo, and 2% on tablets versus 0%.

Warnings that touch your plate

Dehydration and kidneysAcute kidney injury has been reported, mostly in people who became dehydrated after nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. The label advises patients to "take precautions to avoid fluid depletion".
GallbladderIn adults on the injection, gallstones in 1.6% vs 0.7% on placebo, gallbladder inflammation in 0.6% vs 0.2%.
Low blood sugarRisk rises with insulin or a sulfonylurea. In Table 3, hypoglycemia in people with type 2 diabetes was 6% vs 2%. Do not cut meals sharply without your prescriber.
Surgery or sedationTell your care team you take Wegovy before any procedure.

The nutrition priorities

From the 2025 joint advisory of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association and The Obesity Society:

  1. Protein first, at every meal. In the STEP 1 trial of semaglutide 2.4 mg, about 38% of the weight lost was lean mass, as the advisory reports. Protein, together with strength training your care team approves, supports muscle. See how much protein.
  2. A small breakfast, then small meals every 3 to 4 hours. The advisory notes nausea often occurs in the morning or after long periods without eating.
  3. Fewer fatty and large meals, which the advisory links to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
  4. Fluids through the day: water, unsweetened drinks, ginger or peppermint tea.
  5. Fiber from foods, gradually, to help with constipation (24% on Wegovy 2.4 mg in Table 3).
  6. Nutrient-dense choices: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, eggs, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds, plant oils. Fewer refined carbs, sugary drinks, fast foods and sweets.
  7. Minimal alcohol.

A Wegovy day, in practice

On the tablets, breakfast waits until the time your label instructions allow; make it small and protein-rich (eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese). On the injection, timing is free. Then: a small lunch built around chicken, fish, beans or tofu with vegetables; a protein snack mid-afternoon; a modest dinner with half the plate vegetables. Talk to your clinician This page is general nutrition information, not medical advice, and no meal plan changes how Wegovy works or promises a weight result. Follow your prescriber's instructions for your dose and, for tablets, for how to take them. The Wegovy label and Medication Guide tell patients to contact their healthcare provider right away for severe stomach pain that will not go away (sometimes spreading to the back, with or without vomiting), nausea, vomiting or diarrhea that does not go away, gallbladder signs such as upper stomach pain, fever, yellow skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools, and signs of low blood sugar or a serious allergic reaction.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Wegovy meal plan?
No. The Wegovy label says it is used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, and gives no menu or calorie number. Food advice for people on GLP-1 therapy comes from the 2025 joint advisory and from your care team.
When should I eat if I take Wegovy tablets?
The label gives specific instructions for the tablets about taking them on an empty stomach with a small amount of water and waiting before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines. Follow your prescriber's and pharmacist's instructions exactly; the meal plan fits around them.
How common is nausea on Wegovy?
In the Wegovy label (Table 3, adults, 2.4 mg injection), nausea was reported by 44% of patients versus 16% on placebo, diarrhea by 30% versus 16%, vomiting and constipation by 24% each. The 2025 joint advisory suggests small meals, avoiding fatty meals and adequate fluids, which may help some people feel more comfortable.
Do I need to eat more protein on Wegovy?
Many people need to pay closer attention to protein because they eat less. The 2025 joint advisory notes that 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg per day has been proposed during active weight reduction, or 80 to 120 g per day. Your clinician or dietitian can set the right range for you.
